 HISTORY   MUSEUM  –  PAVLIKENI

 

The history museum in Pavlikeni was founded in September 1978 .It has been keeping, popularizing, studying and preserving the cultural and historical heritage of Pavlikeni and the towns and villages in the region. Over 25 000 fund units of movable monuments of culture are kept in the museum funds. The museum is housed in a detached two-floor building designed by the architect  Teofilov and has 600sq. m. exhibition area. 

On the first floor of the building is an “ Art Gallery”, where over 300 works of arts – painting, white-and-black drawing, and econography – are exhibited.

On the second floor of the museum a General Historical Display is arranged, in which the history of Pavlikeni and the region is traced back in chronological order. The exhibited museum valuables are thematically arranged in the sections: “Archaeology”, “The Renaissance”, “ Ethnography”, “ Modern history”.

Section “ARCHAEOLOGY” – varied of form, decoration, and function ceramic containers and objects from the Ancient  Potery Centre / I – IV century BC/.

Section “RENAISSANCE”- The period of the National Liberating struggle in the Pavlikeni region during the Ottoman domination is presented. The traverse of through the region of the bands of Filip Totyu / 1867/ and Hadzi Dimitar and Stefan Karadza /1868/ are traced back, as well as the places of their most dramatic struggles with the centuries-old conquerer. Special place is destined to Bacho Kiro’s activity and to Pop Hariton’s band during the April rebellion in 1876.

 

Section “ETHNOGRAPHY” – Particular moments of the every –day life and labour activity of the people from the region of Pavlikeni during the Renaissance are topically presented. Labour tools, used in agriculture and stock - breeding are exhibited here. And also some crafts as weaving, pottery, etc. Here you can see the characteristic for the region national costumes, textiles and embroidery, house furniture, the holiday rites of a wedding, Easter, Christmas and the holiday “Thrifon Zarezan”.

 

“The Eternal Calendar” created after the idea of Father Matey Preobrazenski /Mitkaloto/ is a unique exhibit from the Renaissance period. The Calendar was made in 1870 by the icon painter Venko from Tryavna, Its dimensions are 158 – 116 sm and it was painted on the wall of the Bulgarian public co-educational school in the village of Mihaltsi, municipality of Pavlikeni. The wall - painting is the only preserved material evidence of the natural genius of Mitkaloto. The original of the calendar has been kept in the exhibition of the History museum – Pavlikeni since 2000.

 

Section “MODERN HISTORY” – The development of Pavlikeni after the Liberation in 1878 until the 1960s is traced back. A great number of photographs, documents and other exhibits tell the visitor about the recognition and development of the town as a central administrative, commercial and transport centre of the Pavlikeni district during the first half of the 20th century. The accent is put upon the first craftsman’s workshops, factories and co-operations, special room is given to the activity of the Chitalishte / Cultural centre/ in Pavlikeni and the first schools, local public organizations and societies.
